SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.26 g, 10 h), circa 470-466. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying left to crown the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣVRAKOΣ-IO-N Pearl-diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back, wearing single pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 437 (V233/R313). HGC 2, 1310. SNG ANS 135 (same obverse die). Attractively toned. Minor marks and with a thin surface crack on the reverse, otherwise, about very fine.
